Can You Solve This? The Overlooked Dutch Invention Which Forged our Modern World
There are numerous candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a new book, however, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, building a simple trading ship required approximately ten lumberjacks laboring over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical saw, which converted logs to planks using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could build vessels faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that sparked a century of Netherlands naval, financial as well as artistic dominance in Europe and the world.
The Original True Industrial Device
The inventor's lumber mill, contends the writer, was “mankind’s first true industrial apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. A single part transformed its circular movement into up-and-down motion for the cutting blade. Another component transformed that same spinning movement into a lateral motion advancing the log to the blade. A ratchet system moved the log ahead one precise increment each cycle.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance was to integrate these parts so they acted within a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every downward motion while advancing on every return stroke. This constituted a remarkably clever application of basic components.”
Which brings us to the current puzzle. The task is for you to reimagine a key the fundamental ideas underpinning Corneliszoon’s invention.
Round and Up
Construct a mechanism which converts rotary movement into up-and-down motion. You have these items exclusively: A rotating disc. Two pins. Two rods. A “sleeve”, that is a tube or housing through which one of the bars will fit snugly. (Assume you can mount components on a stand, so the parts do not fall down.)
