White House Announces Federal Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark

The White House confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, unions sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official directed the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.

A report argued that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the administration to conduct terminations, citing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
